Approach

I photograph people in places. The style is editorial and the method is mostly waiting: staying out of the way, keeping the camera up, and letting a day behave the way it was always going to. Very little gets arranged, which is why so little of it looks arranged.

I started in 1997 and went full time after graduating with Merit from Glasgow Metropolitan College. The press work that followed was shortlisted for Scottish Young Photographer of the Year three years running, in 2006, 2007 and 2008. A picture from the Guisachan Gathering, made in the glen where the golden retriever began, ran in the New York Times and travelled a good deal further from there.

Home is Inverness, with Fiona and our three, so most of the work happens across the Highlands and Islands: Skye, Glencoe, Lewis, Loch Ness, the Black Isle. The rest of the year takes in commercial and editorial commissions, whisky and farming among them, and several weeks abroad on travel work.
